D-Sisyphe by Meher Awachri

Another compelling performance at Shubbak Festival in London this week.

Inspired by Camus' Le mythe de Sisyphe, this piece is a meditation on the absurdity of life. D-Sisyphe tells the story of a Tunisian construction worker through theatre and dance. A desperate man who drinks too much, abuses his child, a complex character we are prone to sympathize with despite or because of his shortcomings. A man who is struggling with religion, metaphysics and himself. Awachri successfully researched the world of construction work in Tunis for this piece. Transcripts of interviews compose the text, often sounding like a solipsistic erratic monologue. A tour de force one-man show, a very intense and honest performance by its writer/director Awachri. Recommended!
