"Le temps ou les arabes dansaient"
This is an interesting dance piece by Radohuane el Meddeb.
Essentially an hommage to the belly dancing divas of the 1940's, it is also a feminist piece about notions of gender, desire, representation of femininity, masculinity and gay bodies in Tunisian culture. Although uneven - especially in the first part - I found its analysis of "the schizoid nature of arab society" very poignant. According to the choreographer "arab society is split. It is either very still or in frenzy movement; very silent or too talkative". The piece is constructed like a crescendo of minimalist belly moves performed by 4 men imitating the attitudes of bell
y dancers transposed into a man's body. Worth checking it out.
